Fat people could face benefit cuts

Could obese people have their benefit cuts if they fail to exercise as ordered by their doctor?

New proposals to use the benefit system to encourage obese claimants to get fit have been published in a report by a Tory-run council and a think tank.

Officials could monitor claimants through their use of smartcards to access leisure centres - opening the door to potentially docking benefits from those refusing to exercise as prescribed by their doctor.

Westminster city council and the Local Government Information Unit think-tank have published the report, which is titled A Dose of Localism: The Role of Councils in Public Health.

The report comes ahead of town halls becoming responsible for public health services in April amid rising demands for services and spending cuts. Obesity alone costs the NHS £5.1 billion a year.

It said: “Relocalisation of council tax benefit and housing benefit combined with new technologies provide an opportunity for councils to embed financial incentives for behaviours that promote public health.

“The increasing use of smart cards for access to leisure facilities, for instance, provides councils with a significant amount of data on usage patterns.

“Where an exercise package is prescribed to a resident, housing and council tax benefit payments could be varied to reward or incentivise residents.”

Philippa Roe, leader of Westminster city council, said: “This report contains exactly the sort of bright, forward-thinking and radical ideas that need to be looked at.”

She added the potential improvements to the nation’s health and to the public purse could be “significant”, but claimed it could only work if the government clarified the situation around the funding formula for public health.

Team Weight Loss – Lose weight with the support of family and friends.

Today, an independent developer released an app on Google Play (Android Market).
The app (titled Team Weight Loss) goes against the conventional weight loss approach.

It does this by encouraging it’s users to be part of a team.

Team members can consist of anyone – partners, friends, family, co-workers, etc. The app was built from the ground up with team focus in mind. Users can easily use the app without being part of a team, but this is discouraged as Team Weight loss encourages it’s users to manage their weight with the support of others.

Target Audience:
• Family members wishing to manage their weight together.
• Weight loss support groups wishing to keep an eye on each other’s efforts.
• Co-workers wishing to embark on a short term weight loss regime.
• Partners wishing to help each other to maintain an healthy weight
• And so on…

How it works:
The main area of the app is the weight graph. The weight graph displays weight entries (over time) of all members within a user’s team. The weight graph shows weight entries as loss or gain. Actual weight entries are hidden by default (but can be changed).

This ensures that members’ real weight remains private and only their weight loss “performance” is visible to their team members.

Teams have a start date. The graph will show all weight entries as loss or gain based on this date (i.e. how much weight you and your team members lost or gained since the team started).
From the weight graph the user can easily navigate to other areas of the app. These include:
• Weight Entry list (where the user can add or delete their weight entries)
• Teams (where the user can search, join or create teams
• Profile (where the user can change their settings)

Two version of the app are available on Google Play:Free (ad supported):

Organic Smoked Salmon Can Keep Dieters Healthy While Offering Weight Loss Help

There are many ways to lose weight but it is important that dieters remain healthy and continue to enjoy a regular intake of nutrient and vitamin rich ingredients in their daily diet.
Organic smoked salmon offers all of these benefits and many more besides which makes it one of the best possible additions to a diet.
It is filling, healthy, nutritional, and tastes great so it is no ordeal to have to add it to a weekly meal planner.
Fad diets tend to be exactly that – a fad, or a passing craze. People try them, possibly even find that they initially lose weight, but then discover that eating the same food types over and over again on a daily basis is very difficult. Worse still, some such diets can prove very unhealthy as the human body simply isn’t meant to endure such a high intake of some of the food products that have been mooted as a fad diet ingredient.

A balanced and nutritional meal plan should be considered an integral part in weight loss but it should also be varied. It should include meats as well as vegetables, roots, and other food types. Organic smoked salmon is especially beneficial because it is free from toxins and packed full of Omega 3 and vitamin E while being very low in carbohydrates.

Ardtaraig Foods is a family run business that provides their clients with access to Scottish and other fine foods. One of their most popular ranges is that of organic smoked salmon and this is available to order alone or as part of a gift basket or other collection of food items.
